Round robin with playoffs
Updated
This is the recommended tournament format on Tourny. Teams play a round robin in pools, then the top teams advance to a playoff bracket. The steps below use a single elimination playoff; double elimination playoffs are set up the same way.
How to set up a round robin with playoffs
- Open the Manage tab and select Format, then click Select format.
- Choose Round robin to single elimination (or Round robin to double elimination) and continue.
- Configure your standings: points for a win or tie, and the order of your tiebreakers.
- Choose how many playoff brackets to use. Use one bracket, or add more to split teams into flights (for example, an A and B flight).
- Confirm your format.
- Open Teams and click Add teams to add all of your teams.
- Open Rounds and click Create pools. Arrange teams into pools, choose how many games each team plays, then generate, review, and save the games.
- Set up your Advancing teams:
- Rank teams within their pool, or use overall ranks to compare teams across all pools.
- Choose how many teams advance to the playoffs.
- Create your playoff bracket. Review the matchups, swap teams if needed, and add placement games such as a third-place match.
- Click Save.
Pool play and playoff games now appear in the Schedule tab. In the Standings tab you can switch between pool standings and the playoff bracket. Next, schedule your games.
Round robin with playoffs FAQs
Q: How are teams placed into the playoff bracket?
A: Teams are placed based on how they finish in pool play, using the advancing rules you set (pool rank or overall rank). You can still adjust matchups in the bracket before saving.
Q: Can I add games for third place or other placements?
A: Yes. When creating your bracket, add placement games, such as a third-place match, to decide final placements beyond the champion.
Q: What happens when pool play finishes?
A: Confirm the pool play results from the Standings tab to advance teams into the playoffs. See Transition between rounds.
