Round robin

Updated

In a round robin, teams are split into pools and play the other teams in their pool. Standings are calculated automatically as results come in, using the tiebreakers you choose.

How a round robin works

In a full round robin, every team plays every other team in its pool once. The team with the best record wins the pool, and tiebreakers settle teams with the same record.

The number of games grows quickly with pool size. A pool of n teams needs n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games:

  • 4 teams: 6 games, 3 per team
  • 5 teams: 10 games, 4 per team
  • 6 teams: 15 games, 5 per team
  • 8 teams: 28 games, 7 per team

If that's more games than you have time for, split teams into more pools, or have each team play a set number of games instead of everyone. Want a champion at the end? Use round robin with playoffs.
